When the red, red, robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’
along, along
There’ll be no more sobbin’ when he starts throbbin’
his old sweet song.
Wake up! Wake up you sleepy-head!
Get up! Get up, get out of bed!
Cheer up! Cheer up, the sun is red.
Live, love, laugh and be happy.
What if I’ve been blue? Now I’m walkin’ through
fields of flowers.
Rain may glisten but I still listen for hours and hours.
I’m just a kid again, doin’ what I did again, singin’
a song
When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along.
|
I remember sitting by my bedroom window, as a little
girl, listening to this swing tune over and over again on an old phonograph.
|
ACTIVITY IDEAS:
|
1.
Play
it to wake up to, when you or someone you love feels grouchy,
have chores to do or
when it’s pouring rain.
2.
Set
up makeshift birdbaths all over the yard in view of a large
window. Sit
patiently and wait for feathered friends to fly in and splash
about while you listen to this song

ACTIVITY IDEAS:
1. Introduction
|
Show
children photos of meadows with horses grazing.
Ask them to describe what they see.
Show them photos of a rattlesnake in slithering and
coiled positions.
Ask them how a snake moves.
Define special new words: |
|
MEADOW- a big, grassy open area, surrounded by trees
and/or mountains and sprinkled with flowers
HANDSOME- large and beautiful
CHOMPING- big biting & chewing
SLITHERING-
to slide forward with a wiggle
|
2. As A
Fingerplay (18 mo-5 yrs)
Three handsome horses…hold up
three fingers
Out on the meadow…spread
hands out before you, palms up
Chomping on the grass…pretend
your hands are horses’ teeth, tearing at the grass
Along came a rattlesnake slithering past…place
palms of hands together and wriggle
them forward through the grass
One handsome horse
heard…shake one finger
And he galloped away so fast!...slap
thighs quickly, getting softer and softer
Repeat until all horses are gone.
3. As A
Dramatic Movement Play (4-7 yrs)
|
Begin with Intro and Fingerplay above. When all are
familiar with the song designate a meadow indoors or out. Allow
children to choose who will be the horses, rattlesnakes, birds,
butterflies, even the flowing water. Some may wish to be trees or rocks.
Encourage them to LISTEN and ACT out the song. Scarves
may be used for wings or trickling water.
|
4. As A
Percussive Dramatic Play (for large group 4-8 yrs)
|
Follow all suggestions
above, making certain that everyone is very familiar with the
story and its sound effects. Depending on age this could take weeks. Divide
group into MUSICIANS and MOVERS. Explain that the musicians make the sounds of the story
and the movers must listen and act. Assign the following instruments:
|
WATER- African seed pods rubbed constantly over knees
BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES- Triangles gently tapped at
random
RATTLESNAKE- Maracas
GALLOP- plastic cups on the carpet
>>> Give everyone an opportunity to play all
parts<<<
