7. THE HIKING SONG

H. A. Florek copyright 2006

Lead & harmony vocals, acoustic rhythm guitar, banjo:

Miss Holly / Acoustic lead guitar: Ed Florek / Acoustic bass:  Bill Bryson

Oh how I love to hike along a pinewood path.

Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel-tee

And listen to the dancing river sing and laugh.

Yodel, odel-tee.  Yodel, odel, odel-tee.

A blue jay swoops on by and calls to me.

She sounds about as happy as can be.

And when I start to feel that joyful fancy-free

I Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel, odel-tee.

I leap across a stream and find a fallen log.

Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel-tee.

To sit upon and snack and visit with a frog.

Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel, odel-tee.

Some squirrels chase and chatter up a tree.

They stop to shake their bushy tails at me.

And when the things around me fill my heart with glee.

I Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel, ode- tee.

And when the afternoon wears on

And the trail seems so steep and long

I keep hiking on and on with a song!

Oh how I love to hike along a mountain trail.

Yodel odel-tee. Yodel, odel-tee.

And watch a raven soaring down a rocky vale.

Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel-tee. Yodel, odel-tee-ee!

Yodel, odel, odel-tee.

         ACTIVITY IDEAS 3-5 yr

1.  Play this song in the car as you and your family are winding up

that mountain road headed for your campsite.

2.  Don hats and snack-filled backpacks and take off around the yard to the beat

of the song.  Yodel back and forth to one another. Snack in special spot.

   3.  For rainy day fun follow same plan by creating your own indoor forest using

furniture, scarves, boxes and stuffed animals. Take off through your make believe

woodland while listening to the song. Snack in the "meadow" under a "tree" or

   by the "stream".

8. A TREE

H A Florek & Ed Florek copyright 2006

Vocal & Chimes: Miss Holly /  Both Guitars: Ed Florek / Violin:

Jim Sitterly / Mandolin: Russ Landry

A tree is a wonderful thing.

It makes a good place to read or to swing.

It's home for the birds and the bees.

Do you like to be where there are lots of trees?

A tree is a wonderful plant.

It makes food for the monkeys and ants,

And squirrels and koalas and even you and me.

Under a tree is where I like to be.

A tree is a wonderful thing.

A tree is a wonderful thing.

It makes a good place to rest or to sing.

Just lie on your back as you please.

Now turn your eyes heavenward up through the leaves.

It's a beautiful world up there;

Greenery lacing the air.

Dragonflies and clouds dancing by; so much more to see.

Under a tree is where I like to be.

A tree is a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful...

A tree is a wonderful thing.

       ACTIVITY IDEAS

After everyone’s had a chance to run and play, lead them to a grove of trees where a CD player stands ready with this song. Invite children to lie down, breath slowly and look up. Tell them to watch for the things in the song then play it, allowing them to relax and ponder afterward.
