     ACTIVITY IDEAS

1. As A Fingerplay

...crawled up upon a leaf... palm of hand face up, crawl index finger from other hand onto palm 

...spun herself a cocoon... wrap fingers over index 

...dreamt that she could fly... hold hands in cocoon position up to cheek, tilting head

...woke up she was a butterfly... open both hands and flutter them like wings.

2. As A Creative Dance 

Give each child a colorful scarf. Tell them that their scarves can be leaves, cocoons, then wings.  Ask them to listen to the song and do what the caterpillar does. When the butterflies wake up encourage creativity such as twirling, swooping downward and upward, leaping, using head and arms.  How can they use feet in a way other than running? Acknowledge those who are inventive.

    I'm a rip-snortin', re-shapin', pushin’, shovin',

 

    slopin', slidin', 

 

    Hard-workin', solid steal, big old happy bull.

 

 

ACTIVITY IDEA

Read heavy equipment stories. Point out a bulldozer's TRACKS 

 

(instead of wheels) and it's BLADE for pushing. 

 

Place three to six laundry baskets around the perimeter of the room. Scatter a

 

multitude of light weight objects into the center of the room (i.e. foam balls,

 

cardboard boxes, paper tubes, bean bags, small stuffed  animals,

 

strawberry crates). 

 

Designate one receptacle for each type of object. Make certain that 

 

everyone's knees are protected by long pants or pads.  

 

Inform them that they get to be bulldozers by using only their BLADES 

 

(head, bottoms of feet, behinds or elbows) to move all of the

 

objects into piles in front of their proper receptacles. 

 

When the song is over and the piles are complete they may turn into skip

 

loaders to fill the baskets (using hands).  Afterwards, invite them to the 

 

mechanic's garage for relaxation and maintenance.
